Feeling Ambitious

Kurt and I spent one ambitious {HOT!} Saturday under the carport working on this project that helped brighten up our dining room space. We're really enjoying the pop of color when we walk in the door.

First, we had to take the topcoat off of the table.  We used a thick deglosser to pull out the moisture. We did a little sanding around the edges and a few spots that didn't take the deglosser as well. We wiped off the dust and then gave it a once over with mineral spirits to get it nice and clean.

While that was drying we removed the seat cushions (notice this badass using the motorcycle as a work bench) and deglossed the middle portion of the chairs so they would be ready for staining. We stained them with Minwax Polyshades Espresso Gloss Stain and Poly in One.

While that was drying, we went inside to cool down and while we were there we reupholstered the cushions with nothing more than a little {red tag clearanced!} fabric and a staple gun.

We covered the stained portions with plastic and used Rustoleum Spray Filler Primer in Gray to prime everywhere we were going to paint. It took a little over two cans to prime the table and six chairs.

I forgot to take pictures of the painting process! My dear friend Natalie came over and happily picked up a brush with us in the heat to help get it all complete. After a bit of cleanup and reassembling the chairs, our dining room looks like a whole different place!

Next up is pulling up the carpet and refinishing the wood floors!

Rant

Lately I have been wondering if having a strong opinion on a subject means you have to be forceful about it. I really don't appreciate tearing others down and making them feel badly just because you disagree on something. Does it really make you feel better to prove me wrong? Go ahead and tell me your opinion...once.

Sometimes I write here.

Ten things preoccupying me from blogging.

1. New second job. Being away from home for eleven hours a day makes me tired!

2. My good ol' husband. We're only in the same place for four hours a day so I try to make the most of it.

3. Besties. Being an adult and having to schedule in time for friends is lame. I don't see them enough.

4. Game of Thrones. The season just ended and it's going to be a long ten months without it!

5. Sleeping. Long days, short nights.  Zzzzzzzzz!

6. Fiiz. This place is becoming a habit. I'm not too sad about that.

7. My cat.  Oh Kitty whose name I may be considering changing to Kittendor. He likes to snuggle.

8. Harry Potter.  I'm going through a phase...again.

9. Decorating. I'm loving summer decor right now. Can it stay sunny forever?

10. Oh yeah, I'm lazy as hell.

Top o' the mornin' to ya

I enjoy making decorations for holidays and now that I have a place for them, I fear I have created a monster in myself.

I put together this St. Patricks's Day mantle over the weekend, and I have to say, I quite like it.

This was {of course} done on the cheap.
K&S: a gift from my sister-in-law, purchased from Hobby Lobby.
Banner: made from paper and string I already had. Idea came from here.
Candles: a gift from my mother-in-law, just added coordinating ribbon from my stash.
Printables: found here and here. Frames found lying around the house.
Lucky, Shamrocks & Horseshoes: bought unfinished at The Wood Connection and added the paper and glitter.
Beer Bottles: courtesy of my husband who willingly obliged when I said I needed two empty bottles for a craft.

It makes me happy every time I look at it. I can't wait to have friends over for a party!

Sorry about the crappy cell phone pictures. It was easier and much faster.

One year later

I remember every detail of this day last year. The sights, the sounds, but most drastically, the emotions.  I still feel a pit in my stomach whenever we pass the hospital where it happened; a twinge of hurt when we have family gatherings without you.

I remember seeing you at the hockey game the night before your heart attack. You were talking with someone and I kept thinking, "Go talk to Doug." I can't help but regret not listening to myself.

It's playoff time again and I know how proud you would be. Everyone is dealing differently, but growing and changing. The imprint you left on our lives is something I will always remember.

We miss you. We always will.
